While the main part of the Wellington Astronomical Society is targeted at students and adults, some members are very involved in promoting and helping younger children to be involved. In Wellington, there is the Galactic Circle astronomy club, as well as a nationwide children's magazine.
GALAXY - TE KORURANGI is a 20 to 28 page, New Zealand space and astronomy magazine for children initiated by the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand. It is packed with stories, cartoons, puzzles, experiments, what's in the night sky, Maori astronomy and other information.
It was published four times a year but is no longer available from
GALAXY-TE KORURANGI TRUST, C/O Tearaway Publishers, PO Box 473, Whanganui.

GALACTIC CIRCLE NZ AOTEAROA is a Space and Astronomy Club for Kids which meets on the third Wednesday of each month between 4.30-6pm at the Carter Observatory. Activities in the past have included overnight stays at the Carter Observatory, star parties, telescope building and workshop activities centred around observations of Mars and the Mars space programme. Members of Galactic Circle get an automatic subscription to the Wellington Astronomical Society's newsletter that includes a kids section.
Galactic Circle members are welcome at the Wellington Astronomical Society's star parties. The group is co-ordinated by Marilyn Head, Ph (04)389-0882, marilyn@actrix.gen.nz who welcomes enquiries. The group is aimed at 6-14 year olds. There's a membership application form available here.
Galactic Circle members joined in a Wellington Astronomical Society project to build a number of telescopes. Two telescopes are available for members to hire. The group is
considering building another telescope as the demand for these easy to use, portable and optically excellent 6" scopes is always high and there is the opportunity to learn how to use them at the WAS star parties.
The next Galactic Circle meeting is posted on the home page here.
