The Society is holding the first astrophotography / dark sky observing event at the Wainuiomata Recreation Area on Saturday 31st August. This event is held in conjunction with the Greater Wellington Regional Council, who are trying to promote the area as a dark sky site. We are lucky to be offered the chance to use the area for free, and both members and non-members of the society are invited for a chance to take some pictures and observe the night sky, although priority will be given to members of the Society first as there is a limit to how many can attend.
If you would like to join us for this event, you will need to register by contacting WAS through Facebook Messenger or by emailing president@was.org.nz. Please include your email and mobile phone number in the text if you are using Facebook Messenger. The gate at the recreation ground will be locked so please be at the location by 6.45pm. At 7pm, the gate will then be opened to allow visitors to enter and closed again shortly after, therefore, it is paramount you are on time.
This is a great location as it is only a short 20-minute drive from the Hutt Valley. WAS hopes to continue the partnership and hold other astrophotography / dark sky events in Wainuiomata in the future. Please don’t forget warm clothes and your photography gear!
