The night sky, filled with stars, is celebrated and protected around the world as a shared heritage, benefiting all living things. The Vision of the International Dark-Sky Association
This year, International Dark Sky Week is 22-30 April. Steve Butler, President of RASNZ, will be our featured speaker this month. His topic is: Changing Colour of Light
The ability to light the night on a large scale is a recent achievement for humans. Until recent decades we have not considered what the unwanted impacts of this ability might be. We now know that the colour of the artificial light plays an important role not just in our ability to see, but in how we function, and how our biosphere has adapted to cycles of light and dark. We need to manage both the amount of light and the colour of that light.
